An Interview with Amoi-TGB, the author of "Amoi-TGB",
one of the best teams of the first Master Championship
by leo (September 2004)
I must thank Amoi-TGB who accepted this interview: Only learning from the experience
of the best competitors, other players can improve their tactics and the behavior of their
warriors. Amoi-TGB's team was one of the best performers in the Master Championship
of September 5th with a very good second place, just behind i-bot, the absolute winner.
leo: Amoi-TGB, I'm very happy that you accepted the interview and I'm very
curious to know
more about you and in particular about your team of warriors. First of
all, a classic
question, can you tell me where did you hear about GUN-TACTYX and why did
you decide to
partecipate to the championship?
Amoi-TGB: i known it by a friend that explained me how to begin, then i
spend around 50 hours to
make a stupid robot, i decided to participate when i saw that on my computer
i got the 3rd place.
leo: Well, at this stage of the game "stupid" bots may be better
than bots that think
to be smart ;)
What can you say about the tactics that you implemented in your team?
I don't want your trade secrets, just a few tips to help other players.
Amoi-TGB: Do not concentrate on "moving", there are others things
to make your bot to do.
For example my bot is not made to visit the map, but it is a mistake. Another
tip is:
try to use all the aptitudes() of your bot!!!
leo: Do you think that "Amoi-TGB" will succeed in beating "i-bot",
the actual
GUN-TACTYX Master? Which are the behaviors that you are going to improve.
Amoi-TGB: i am already beating "ibot" in particular conditions as explained in the forums.
i am going to make something for my bot to move instead of turning
on itself
and i have just found a big mistake in the programming of the game, i am
going to use it in the
competition in about 2 weeks. "I-bot" is really well made, it
is the only one with mine who can
kill 5 other bot if they are front of him, same if they are shooting.
leo: I hope to find that bug in the game as soon as possible to fix it,
so I'm going
to look for the Amoi-TGB's exploits to discover my mistake. Looking for
bugs in the
simulator is a winning tactics that I accept in JROBOTS too, but don't
expect that
the simulator will not be fixed immediately ;)
The other competitors proposed bots with very different behaviors. Do you
like one in
particular? And why?
Amoi-TGB: happily all the bots are different, that is the thing that make the game
interesting, to have different behavior because of different people programming,
this is what we call competition !!!
i like particularly "i-bot", cose it uses strafing.
leo: In a private communication, you told me not to be very interested
in the "Soccer"
competition. Why?
Amoi-TGB: cose it is a lot of time for me to make a program and i would
prefer to win in the
fighting mode than in the soccer one... Anyway it may be very funny, but
only if we can see competition...
leo: Now let's talk about the man. What could you tell us about yourself?
Amoi-TGB: Just a little french, 19 years old, and my computer teacher told
me i won't do anything in my life...
lol...
leo: Your teacher is very encouraging ;)
And What about your hobbies, favorite books and music?
Amoi-TGB: MIYAMOTO MUSASHI (from EIJI YOSHIKAWA)
and as preferred music the sound of the shots of my bots...
leo: A nice sound indeed ;)
Do you have any particular suggestion to make GUN-TACTYX a better game?
Amoi-TGB: the game is really good, but i would like all the players to
be able to connect
at the same time in the game, on internet and see the games at the same
time, so we could
chat at the same time, it would be a great pleasure...
It may be nice to get more players in competition... isn't it ?
another thing: could you put in the game some others musics ??????
leo: Interesting requests, but I suggest you to buy a copy of Unreal
Tournament ;)
Other suggestions?
Amoi-TGB: When i put my olds versions of my bot, at the end, ths score
was so that :
IBOT(50%) GUNNY (50%) AMOI8 (30%) AMOI9 (28%) AMOI10 (25%)...
leo: Gosh! You'd better to stop adding improvements!
Amoi-TGB: In fact, my bot is worst and worst so what i was wanting to say
is that
there is a definite number of things a bot can do, and at the end maybe
all the bot will be the same program, but it may be very nice that there
are a lot
of new players, to do a real competition.
Another thing i would like is to make a map like a cube, but for tournament
: all the
bots are random placed in the level (big war !!!)
leo: If you want to design a level, you're welcome. When the players will
become enough
to keep regular tournaments, someone could ask for an "unknown level
competition" and
it will be a real AI challenge.
Thank you very much for your answers Amoi-TGB!
Amoi-TGB: thanks for the interwiew, i got the 4rth place in the last tournament,
with only some percent of difference, and i played a few games less than the
others bots... very sad...
but for the next i may have some time to loose into programming 8-)
bye, in the arena.
